This type of opal is also known as a Cantera Opal. It is a gemstone formed from rhyolite, which is a kind of igneous rock. This type of opal is very similar to boulder opal but instead of ironstone as the host rock we have rhyyolite. So, when magma cooled on the earth surface, traces of gas and steam escaped from the stone, leaving cavities making way for Mexican opal or Cantera opal to eventually form within the volcanic rock. Pictures can’t capture the way light reflects off these gorgeous opals.
